Acer aspire S3 ultrabook shows off some macbook air skills

Acer is getting ready to roll-out its new Ultrabook laptops, which are expected to go on sale for as little as $899. New Age Electronics are already listing the Acer Aspire S3 at this price, although Acer themselves are refusing to comment on price speculations.

In many ways, the Ultrabook is the answer to the question that is the Apple MacBook Air. Minimal laptops that still manage high performance are the future of mobile computing according to many, and Intel have been heavily promoting their Ultrabook concept to the masses.

The Acer aspire S3 features a very small form factor and enough performance grunt to keep serious users happy, with consumers being given the choice of either a Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 processor. A solid state drive will also be on offer, with a 240GB version being offered against larger non-solid state alternatives.

However, with Ultrabooks, much of the emphasis is being put on the minimal form factor and the instant-on capabilities, and the 13.3 inch Aspire S does not disappoint in either regard. The lightweight aluminium/magnesium chassis is less than 0.5 inches thick, and the entire computer comes in at under 3 pounds.

According to Acer, the Aspire S “Resumes in a quick 1.5 seconds and delivers 50-day battery life via Acer Green Instant On; features large hard drive capacity; and connects to the Internet in 2.5 seconds.

While people in the United States and Europe and going to have to wait a little longer to get their hands on this Ultrabook, the Acer Aspire S has already launched in Japan. If Acer can manage to keep the price down to the reported $899, it looks like they might be onto a winner
