Sony laptops to go 3D

Take a peek at a yet-unreleased Sony 3D Vaio notebook which is tipped to arrive in the market next year. That particular notebook is said to come with a 3D display that has a 240Hz refresh rate, and you can be sure that the 3D display itself will not be manufactured by Sharp because you will need to utilize Bravia shutter glasses instead. What was shown off at IFA 2010 was just a prototype model with a 16-inch display and innards of a Vaio F. Hopefully more light on this notebook will be shed when CES 2011 rolls around, and will Sony bundle the shutter glasses with each purchase, or will they take this opportunity to charge even more money as a separate purchase.

Sony says that enabling portable 3D viewing experiences is part of its strategy for making 3D more "personal" for consumers. One of the portable 3D products that they are preparing to launch is a 3D-enabled Vaio F laptop.

The Windows-based computer offers a rich 3D experience on the road, but it requires active shutter glasses, which will likely make it a non-starter for many users. It's a winner, however, if you want a laptop for playing 3D games or editing video from a 3D camera. I got to see it running some video editing software at Sony's CES booth. The 3D visuals in the content samples viewed were impressive on the Vaio's beautiful, 16-inch 1080p LCD. It offers an excellent sense of depth and easily rivals the quality of full-sized 3D TVs.

The Vaio F has an Intel Core i7 processor and an NVIDIA GPU with 1GB of video memory. Its built-in HDMI output allows you to plug the laptop into a 3D-enabled television for big screen viewing. The need for glasses is going to make it impractical to use the 3D features of the Vaio F while away from home, it makes some sense if you think of it as a laptop in the desktop-replacement class for users who want 3D capabilities. It's worth noting that it has a switch for toggling between 2D and 3D mode, which means that you can still use it if you leave the glasses at home. The 3D Vaio F is expected to launch in Q1 at a price of $1,700.
