AT&T Hits Back Verizon In A New iPhone 4 Commercial [Video]

Verizon’s iPhone has been a huge success and has already broken Verizon’s all-time sales records in just 2 hours. Earlier today, we shared a commercial of Verizon iPhone which takes on AT&T’s network problems. However, we did mention an upside of sticking to AT&T, which was 3G data and voice at the same time.

Soon after Verizon’s commercial, AT&T responded back with not-so-direct, but yeah, a slap.

Verizon may have one of the "largest and most reliable" networks but for services, AT&T offers just so much more that there are customers who would still stick to it.

The commercial ends with a tagline "Only AT&T’s network lets your iPhone talk and surf at the same time" which is of course a feature not available if you’re with Verizon.

The commercial goes like this

*iPhone buzzing*

"Hey baby what’s goin’ on"

*Lady speaks up*

"Happy Anniversary"

"Are we still on for tonight"

*Nervous dude*

"Yeah, of course, of course"

*Lady again*

"You remember to make a reservation right?"

*making reservations on iPhone as he speaks*

"Yeah, I remember that.."

AT&T Offering 2GB of data transfer for free to any of their tethering customers

If the fact that AT&T revamping its text messaging plans and that they recently slapped Verizon in the face isn’t an indication that the war for the iPhone between USA’s 2 biggest carriers is on, then maybe this piece of news will make you think otherwise.

In a not-so-surprising move, AT&T announced today via a press release that they will be offering 2GB of data transfer for free to any of their tethering customers. Up until now, the $20/month tethering plan from AT&T didn’t include any additional data, meaning that you were basically tapping into your data plan allocation to cover your tethering needs…

Needless to say that this move is a straight shot at Verizon who will start offering the iPhone next week, and who already has a very similar tethering offer. If like many you don’t want to pay these ridiculous fees for tethering, MyWi is still your best bet.

On top of that, AT&T will start offering a Mobile Hostpost option to its customers. From what I understand from the press release, this will only be available for the HTC Inspire 4G at first, but I assume it will come to the iPhone rapidly as, once again, Verizon will be offering such a service to its iPhone customers.

In short, this is good news for consumers. It’s amazing how a little bit of competition can fuel aggressive marketing strategies. We’re all about it.

The Likelihood of the iPhone Appearing on T-Mobile Just Decreased With This Video

With the release of an advertisement dissing the iPhone 4 and AT&T’s network, you can pretty much squash any idea of the iPhone appearing on T-Mobile’s network anytime soon.

The video clip purposely takes Apple’s infamous “Mac versus PC” ads, and flips the script. It features an attractive female claiming to be a MyTouch4G, while a guy struggling to support another guy on piggyback claims to be an iPhone 4. Let the hilarity ensure…

Of course the guy riding piggyback is the AT&T network, which is putting a burden on Mr. iPhone, hence slowing him down. Brilliant! The woman then touts the MyTouch’s video-chat-anywhere capabilities — courtesy of T-Mobile’s 4G network — all the while poking fun at the fact that FaceTime for the iPhone 4 only works while connected to Wi-Fi.

Obviously, all of that means nothing to us here at iDB, seeing as a simple jailbreak will allow you to use FaceTime anywhere you receive a cellular signal. Still, the ad is quite amusing, and gives Apple a nice dose of their own medicine.

Slower network or not though, at the end of the day, the MyTouch4G is still, unfortunately, a MyTouch4G.

T-Mobile Ad Takes a Jab at Verizon and AT&T iPhones

We all knew it was bound to happen, but I don’t think we were expecting it this early. T-Mobile’s latest 4G campaign, featuring an Apple vs Mac style, takes a jab at both AT&T and Verizon.

Previously, T-Mobile aired several advertisements outlining the disadvantages of the iPhone on the AT&T network, including the inability to video chat over WiFi on the AT&T iPhone whereas the T-Mobile myTouch 4G can make calls anywhere.

The latest advertisement shows that there’s no fun in having a great handset running on a slow network, referencing AT&T’s unreliable 3G network and Verizon slow CDMA network, when T-Mobile’s network provides 4G speeds…

Now the question is how will Verizon respond?

Verizon iPhone Will Have $30 Unlimited Data Plan for a “Limited Time”

It’s official. The Verizon iPhone will be initially offered with a $30 unlimited data plan. Potential Verizon iPhone customers can celebrate that they will be getting the coveted unlimited data plan that AT&T stopped providing for the iPhone last June.

Verizon’s COO, Lowell McAdam, has confirmed that there will indeed be a $30 unlimited data plan for Verizon iPhone customers when product sales start in February. This move is clearly Verizon’s attempt at attracting disgruntled AT&T iPhone customers to the Verizon Wireless platform.

It looks like Verizon is pulling out the stops to attract as many AT&T customers as they can…

However, Verizon iPhone users won’t have many options for varied data plans. Verizon is discontinuing its 150 MB data plan, which costs only $15 a month. AT&T’s two plans for the iPhone include the 200 MB plan at $15 a month, while $25 will get you 2 GB of usage.

So, it looks like customers will have to buy the $30 unlimited plan if they want an iPhone on Verizon anytime soon. (If you remember, it used to be that way on AT&T too.)

Mr. McAdam told the Wall Street Journal,

“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T. The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.”

Verizon has also said that the network does not plan to keep offering the unlimited data plan for the iPhone. The promotion is clearly for new or converted adopters who want to jump on the Verizon iPhone bandwagon early.

The WSJ concurs,

“But you’d better act fast. Speaking later Tuesday morning, Mr. McAdam said the iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and that the carrier will follow AT&T’s move to tiered pricing in the not too distant future.”

Carriers have been slowly moving from “unlimited” data plans to tiered pricing for some time now. While it would be nice to see Verizon put a stake in the ground and still support unlimited data plans, it’s no surprise that they plan on engaging with their competition’s tiered pricing model.

No news has been released on how much Verizon will charge for the “Personal Hotspot” feature of the Verizon iPhone. Most likely it will cost the same as their already existing tethering plans.

Verizon’s overall sales have slowed in anticipation of the iPhone coming to their platform,

“Mr. McAdam certainly doesn’t want to miss out on any sales now. Anticipation Verizon would soon offer the iPhone held back sales over the fourth quarter, he said. Analysts seemed happy with the subscriber growth, but McAdam wasn’t. “It wasn’t what I hoped it would be,” he said.”

Does this news help inform your decision about possibly switching to the iPhone on Verizon?

If you are ever offered the option for an unlimited plan, I would recommend taking it. Tiered pricing is taking over the mobile data markets, and unlimited plans will be harder and harder to come by as time goes on.
